Built in 1955 by Hinckley to an Owen’s design and recently restored in 2023–2024 by a lifelong competitive sailor.
She’s in excellent condition with a recent sail inventory for club racing and is in the water ready to go at Wickford, RI. Recent paint and varnish.

GENERAL 

The vessel “BRIGADOON” is a 41′ single engine wood sailing cutter built in 1955 by The Hinckley Co, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679. Construction is 1″ Carvel mahogany and cedar planking on topsides and bottom”. Frames are steam bent and laminated white oak sided 2″X11/2″ on 10″ centers. Keel is full length white oak with rudder attached. Prop and shaft are in aperture. Decks are teak over plywood on cambered deck beams. Cabin house is mahogany with canvas finish on cabin top. Cockpit deck is new with new teak overlay. Cockpit coamings are varnished mahogany. Topsides are painted white, bottom; red and decks are teak overlay with varnished cabin house. Exterior lead ballast is secured to hull with bronze bolts. Keel is lead 6000 lbs. All plank fastenings are Silicon Bronze 2-1/4″ #12. All bolts and fastenings throughout vessel are 

TOPSIDES 

Paint finish was found to be in overall good condition at this time. All topside planking found fair and secure to frames. Hull to deck joint found tight with no movement noted. Hull to deck connection is by sheer stringers with bronze through bolts. Hull fastenings are bronze 11/2″ #12 flat head. Stem, stern post and keel are white oak and found in good condition. Transom is painted white and planked with mahogany over oak fashion pieces. Name was noted on transom at this time. Cabin house windows found in good condition with no water leaks noted. 

BOTTOM 

Bottom was inspected on interior and only where accessible with vessel afloat. There was no evidence of any major grounding or impact damage noted from interior. Bottom paint found in good condition. All bottom planking found fair and secure to frames. All underwater thruhull fittings are new bronze ball valves with double hose clamps on all hose connections. All found tight and secure to hull with working shutoff valves. Shaft is 1″ Aquamet stainless steel and appeared straight on dial indicator. Prop is 2-blade Ni-Bral bronze. Rudder is wood and found secure in rudder port. Prop and shaft are in aperture with interior bronze stuffing box gland. Hull potential meter reading for stray current corrosion was good at .80 with no electrolytic deterioration of any underwater metals noted. Hull is round bilge with wood and stainless steel rub rails. 

DECKS 

Main decks are teak over plywood on cambered deck beams with plywood under lay. Overall condition found good. All fittings on deck found tight and secure including rails, handrails, cleats and chocks. Steering is new Edson with binnacle brake and pedestal. Wheel is teak rimmed stainless steel 34″. Cockpit area is new teak over plywood and found in new condition with aft self bailing scuppers. Life lines are new with stainless steel stanchions. Bow rail is stainless steel and found secure. Companion way is fitted with weather boards. Cabintop skylight and hatches found in new condition with varnish finish.  

INTERIOR 

Interior was inspected only where accessible. Interior in general found clean with good housekeeping evident. Interior finish is varnished mahogany with Formica covered counter tops. Cabin sole is teak and holly varnished. All interior plywood bulkheads, floors and stringers were found to be properly attached to hull with no delaminations noted. Bilges found clean and free from debris. All doors, drawers and lockers found to fit properly. Cooking is by Origo 3000 alcohol stove. Installation conforms to ABYC standards. Toilet is Wilcox manual with holding tank and overboard discharge. There were no water leaks evident around hatches or cabin windows. Interior upholstery found in good condition. All cabin house windows found secure with no water leaks evident. Companionway steps found secure. Ice box is lined in stainless steel and found in good condition with opening top. 

ENGINE 

Power is furnished by a new single Westerbeke 4 cylinder diesel engine. HP is 40. Engine serial #60122. Cooling is by fresh water. Transmission is Westerbeke Gear with 2.5-1 reduction. Transmission serial #A06130007. Engine installations appear satisfactory. Beds are steel stringers running fore and aft and found in good condition. Engine mounts appear in good condition. Hours on engine are 10 approximately. Exhaust is rubber through steel pot muffler with rubber to transom. All exhaust connections are double hose clamped. Shaft log stuffing box is fitted with adjustable packing gland. Shift and throttle are Morse and found to be operating properly. Engine was run at dockside only at this time. Engine is fitted with alarm and fuel filters. 

ELECTRICAL 

Vessels system is 12-volt with 115 shore power. Circuit protection is by panel with breaker switches for both systems along with Blue Seas vapor tight battery switches. All wiring found in good condition and properly secured. Three new Interstate group 27 12 volt deep cycle batteries are provided and properly secured in acid proof containers. Battery charging is by alternator on engine and a 20 amp Charles charger. Navigation lights meet International Motor Boat Act requirements. There was no electrolytic deterioration of any underwater metals noted. Vessel is bonded for lightning protection. Shore power cord is 30 amp. 

FUEL SYSTEM 

One rectangular aluminum fuel tank is secured aft of engine. Capacity is 25 US gallons. Installation conforms to ABYC standards. Fill is in cockpit deck and properly marked “DIESEL”. Feed lines are the approved type with Racor filters and shut offs noted. Tanks appear in good condition and pressure tested to 3 psi by manufacturer. Tank material is 5052 aluminum. 

SPARS 

Mast, Boom and spinnaker pole are painted aluminum 

Mast is keel stepped with stainless compression rod from partner to keel 

Al rigging is new 1×19 stainless wire and found in good condition along with chain plates. 

Back stay is fitted with tension adjuster. 

Chain plates are bronze secured to interior hull. 

There were no stress signs evident at chain plated or at mast step

MARINE COVERAGE 

The vessel “BRIGADOON” was found to be in overall excellent condition at this time after undergoing a complete refit to good boat yard workmanship and standards. The vessel at this time is in show room condition with no recommendations required and is considered satisfactory for fire and marine coverage. The vessel conforms to the usual designs and specifications of its type and appears to be well suited for the service intended. 

The report does not constitute a warranty, either expressed or implied, nor does it warrant the future condition of the vessel. It is a statement of the condition of the vessel at the time of survey only. 

This report is issued on a visual examination of the vessel and its equipment. It does not include latent defects or defects hidden by machinery, tanks, cabinets, hull liners or other items prohibiting access. The main engine and auxiliaries were not surveyed by the undersigned other than mentioned in the enclosed report. No warranty or guarantee is given nor liability assumed for errors or omissions. The findings of this survey is not a report either expressed or implied of the seaworthiness of this vessel, or determination of the state of readiness to proceed to sea.
