Take advantage of this affordable gem.  “Wendigo” is a great pocket yacht waiting to be reborn.  She is in overall great shape.  She will need a little extra tinkering to get her ready to sail this spring.

“Wendigo” has had a mostly pampered life.  She has been in storage now since 2005.  She is well preserved, winterized, covered, dry, and ready for new life.  Her donor owned her from 1991, and had her taken care of professionally in Maine at the very yard she is in today.

We have a file full of her service records.  Her well documented maintenance schedule demonstrates regular service.

All of the close up photographs we have are from January 2010.

We have found the price range of the Irwin 28 to be between $6,000.00 and 9,500.00 in good shape.  We have priced this one to move.  Please consider that we are using her as a fundraiser for a worthwhile cause:

Proceeds from the sale of Wendigo will go to Goodwill Hinckley.  Find them on line at:   http://www.gwh.org/

Layout:

Starting forward in the V berth, she has over six feet of room on each berth, with a connector cushion to make a double berth.  A good amount of storage is provided by hammocks, and the decent sized hanging locker aft of the berth.

Her head is on the port side just aft of the V berth.  The head is simple and nicely trimmed with a hand pumped sink, a head (plumbed to a holding tank), and stowage.

The main salon is well laid out, with just the right amount of wood to make her feel rather rich.  The nicely varnished salon table folds out to serve five easily.  Benches do not pull out, but could sleep one smaller person each.

The quarter berth port aft has over 6’.  The cushion was ransacked by a local squirrel.  It does not appear that the squirrel actually nested on board, but rather took the stuffing to a nearby tree.  The cushion will need to be replaced.

The galley is simple and functional.  There is a large cooler with enough room to go on a one week cruise, a hand pumped sink, and an alcohol stove.  The surrounding storage compartments are filled with pots and pans, etc.

topside you will find a rather spacious cockpit with room for more than four adults.  Custom cushions make for very comfortable seating.

Her decks, cabin top, and foredeck are all in great shape, are solid, and well laid out for sailing.  Her sliding companionway cover is Plexiglas, allowing loads of light to the interior.  It appears custom- by a professional, as does her forward hatch.  See photos.

Hull and decks:

Her Decks are in far better shape than one would expect from a boat of this vintage, as is her gel coat.  There are very few scratches, or cracks on deck.  Her teak trim is also in great shape.  It will need to be sanded and finished, but looks almost new

Her hull is likewise in great shape.  Her white topsides are smooth, with no cracks.  It will certainly need a heavy duty buffing, but should come out beautifully.  Her waterline stripes are in good but not perfect shape.  See the photos.

Her bottom is in overall good condition.  One can see by the photos that the bottom paint is flaking in some spots.

Sails & Rigging:

There are reportedly several sets of sails for this boat.  We are still searching for them.  We have inspected the Main.  It is in very good shape.  There is also a found headsail, which is reported to be in good shape.  According to Good Will Hinckley, there should be a second main, as well as a set of head sails.  We are listing her as having the two we have found.  While we are rather certain that we will find the rest- any more are considered a bonus.

All of her spars are in great shape.  Rigging highlights include Harken roller furler, a new looking boom, and Spinnaker pole.

Most of her running rigging looks to be in good to great shape, including sheets, blocks etc.

Her Marlow #16 winches are in working order.  They could be lubricated.

All stanchions and lifelines are in good shape. Stanchions are solid and well bedded.

Engine:

She has an atomic four gas engine.  It is need of a rebuild.  It was winterized in 2005.  It has not been run since.  New wiring, filters, etc, and extensive service records suggest that the engine had been well looked after.  The engine could use a new paint job.  Note the rust in the pictures.

Her shaft, strut, and prop all appear to be properly aligned, solid and in good working condition.

Her throttle, and transmission controls are in great shape, and appear to be recently updated.

Electrical:

The boat has a typical 12 volt two battery system, run via a safety switch to a fused electrical panel.  The batteries will most likely need to be replaced. All wiring, interior lights, running lights etc. seem to be in good shape, though we have not tested them.

Electronics:

Standard Horizon VHF radio

Signet Knot log (presumed working- not tested)

Ritchie Compass

Pioneer 8 track stereo.  Abba 8 track cassette not included.

Some extra equipment:

Kelvin &Wilfred G. White Co. Barometer

Seth Thomas Tide Clock

Navigation tools

Beveled Kerosene lantern

Whale manual bilge pump

2 Barlow Winch handles

Custom cockpit cushions

Swim ladder

Life Sling throwable pfd

Lines, fenders, etc.

Tool kit, tools, hardware- including shackles etc.

Ensign

Hull plugs

Lead sounding line on a spool.

Plenty more

TopProjects/Issues:

The Atomic four should be looked at/ serviced by a mechanic before being operated.  Statistics suggest she will need some work.

The Quarter berth cushion will need to be replaced.

The bottom should be faired, and have a coat of bottom paint.

It would be a good idea to update hoses, etc.

All through hulls should be inspected.  Some may need to be serviced, or updated.

We are still searching for the sails.  Updates as they are found.

A spring cleaning will make her look great.

How does the charter/sale arrangement work?

Most boats can be purchased for their current appraised value or chartered on a long term basis (minimum three years) with an option to purchase. The purchase price of chartered vessels is usually established at the beginning of the lease and reflects the anticipated market value of the boat three years hence. If a charterer elects to exercise the option and purchase the vessel at the end of the charter, all charter payments are credited against the agreed upon purchase price. There are no interest charges or financing fees, etc. The charterer may also choose not to exercise his or her purchase option, in which case the security deposit will be returned.  Charter payments will be kept as charter hire. Broker commissions are generally paid in full at the commencement of the charter. For more information, please contact us by email or call us at (401) 842-0752.
