Description:
Lyman is one of the truly great names in American boatbuilding. Founded by cabinetmaker Bernard Lyman in 1875, Lyman Boats quickly established a regional reputation for quality lapstrake wooden boats.
"Tern" has had some significant work done in recent years. In addition to a new cockpit, aft area, and deck, her engine has been rebuilt, she has new wiring, a new console, fuse box, new fuel tank, a second battery, 12V plug, new stern light, and a custom mooring cover. The bilge was scraped, sanded, and repainted in the summer of 2007. This boat is in sound condition. Many important elements have been professionally replaced or restored.
We have a 2007 condition and valuation survey available for viewing upon request.
Construction:
Clinker-built, round bottom design; 5-ply fir marine plywood (1/2"). Hull sides are 5-ply fir marine plywood (3/8"); Frames are steam-bent white oak throughout. Keel, stem, knees, and all other structural parts are white oak. All jointer work is solid Philippine mahogany and mahogany plywood. She's salt water fastened throughout and her deck beams are sound.
Engine:
In her survey there had been some question as to the condition of the engine, because it had not been run in a while. This fall we had a mechanic run her, and check her out. The report back was that the engine ran beautifully.
Accommodation:
"Tern" has two berths and sleeps two. She has a manual head. There are cushions for the v-berth and clean upholstery. Her cockpit was re-done in 2002 in West African mahogany. Double fore and aft seats with backs are varnished mahogany. All four seats are on piano hinges for access to storage beneath. Full transom seat with back in varnished mahogany is on hinged panel to access storage for bumpers and safety equipment.

Projects/Issues:
According to her 07 survey "minor small de-lamination was found on the transom port side around the water line- not critical, but should be addressed".
In her survey it was noted that " A build up of bottom paint creating what is known as "paint sickness" ....has not caused any significant damage, but need to be addressed in order to preserve the structural integrity of the hull. ....have the bottom paint taken down ..., caulking replaced at the hood ends of the planks fore and aft, fastening heads re-puttied and the bottom brought up to snuf in general."
She has been stored indoors before and since her survey. She is in great shape overall.
