Atlantic Challenge

The Apprenticeshop is one of the oldest and finest traditional boat building schools in the country. Begun 31 years ago within the complex of The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and founded by Lance Lee, the ‘Shop was inspired by the philosophy of Kurt Hahn—who believed that education should encourage both thought and action, not one or the other, but both at once. Lee believed that practicing resourcefulness and learning through boatbuilding—a medium that requires decisions, care, patience, forethought, and time, is as important as learning boatbuilding.

The Community Boating Center

Making Sailing Affordable and Accessible in Rhode Island

In communities across the country, non-profit, public access sailing programs are making learning to sail and recreational boating affordable and accessible to ordinary folks.

Several years ago, it struck a group of local sailors that the people of Rhode Island should have access to a community boating program. Organized and implemented entirely by volunteers, this visionary plan was set into action. The Community Boating Center (CBC) at Providence's India Point Park opened in June 1994 with a small fleet of boats, a few docks and a boat storage shed built largely with donated materials and volunteer labor.

Founded as a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization, CBC offers a variety of opportunities that allow the general public to experience the thrill of sailing in upper Narragansett Bay.

Within the decade, the Museum had outgrown this building; over the years, it has grown to encompass a total of 13 buildings, eight of which are on the National Historic Register.
